Spagyrics: ANCIENT TECHNIQUES
Spagyrics (which means extraction of divine gifts) is a technique considered to be a sister of Alchemy, with which one can extract the essence of materials from a plan t-based on the three kingdoms of nature; fire, water, and earth and then recombine them to create a single ‘essence’ which will contain superior medicinal properties. These three kingdoms of nature are based upon the three cardinal Principles of Alchemy include: Sulfur associated with Fire and the Soul of the plant, Mercury associated with the element of water and the Spirit of the plant, and Salt associated with the Earth element, the body of the plant. Paracelsus (1493-1591) was an alchemist and father of Spagyrics. He believed that nature is a form of alchemy and that “heaven is man and man is heaven…we must, therefore, understand that “when we administer medicine, we administer the whole world.” Spagyrics are highly potentised herbal essences alchemically prepared to contain the spirit, soul and body of the herbs and therefore capable of treating on these three levels of the individual. According to the ancient procedure used for making alchemic tincture of Rosemary, the flowers of the plant are gathered at a special time on a specific day, in order to reap the greatest benefit from its natural properties during the maceration process. The flowers are macerated in natural alcohol under the sun and the moon for over 40 days. Once the first stage has been completed, the tincture is filtered and the solid part is calcinated three times in a row. This process lasts for several weeks, which allows the natural oligoelements to be extracted from the plant and transferred into the alcohol. Finally, essential oils of Rosemary, Bergamot, Petitgrain and Lemon are added to the tincture, providing an enchanting fresh and natural fragrance to this cosmetic blend.
